If you're at "retina distance" from your 1080p set now and don't plan on moving your couch closer, upgrading to 4K may not make a big difference to your experience. More importantly, at that same distance, your eyeballs won't be able to squeeze any more detail out of a 4K image than a 1080 one. Get far enough away from a 1080p set and, hey presto, it's a retina display! ![]() Remember when Apple made a big fuss about "retina" displays a few iPhones back? "Retina" refers to screens that have sufficient resolution that at a normal viewing distance your eye can't make out individual pixels. How close do I need to sit to a 4K screen? And 4K screens are noticeably sharper than 1080p screens.īut if you're sticking with roughly the same size of television, and are used to sitting pretty close, you may not see that much of a difference – especially if you're still mostly watching HD content rather than 4K video. We're talking about a similar jump in resolution as the one from SD (480 lines high) to HD (1080 lines high). For extra added fun, you also might hear this resolution referred to as 2160p. And before you ask, yes, the industry named 1080 resolution after image height, but named 4K after image width. It's called 4K because the images are around 4,000 pixels wide. Although, if you have the money to spend on a 4K projector, then there’s nothing quite like watching a 300 inch screen.(Image credit: Samsung) Why is it called 4K? 4K TVs overall remain more affordable, accessible, and loaded with features. However, that hasn’t changed the actual difference in these products. In recent years, the cost of a 4K projector has come down and therefore the biggest hurdle is no longer what it once was - even on the best 4K projector models. Over time, 4K projectors have also gotten smarter, but their interface and smarts still trail behind the TV.ĤK TVs still remain the best option for most people. As the industry moves further into the connected home age, you’d be hard-pressed to find a TV without a rich user experience. Then there’s the user experience in general. Furthermore, projectors come with the added issue of the environment impacting on the brightness. However, the brightness and contrast is its downfall compared to LG OLED TVs. LG is the current leader in OLED technology and sells a 4K OLED projector. These are also areas where projectors tend to be limited compared to TVs. Although upscaling is less of a problem now than before, making sure a 4K projector outputs a true 4K picture is something to be aware of before buying, as is brightness and contrast. Instead of offering a true 4K experience, some devices emulate one by taking a lesser resolution and filling in the details. This has resulted in manufacturers relying more heavily on additional technologies including 4K upscaling. Projectors suffer in resolution compared to their TV counterparts. While virtually every 4K TV is actually outputting 4K now, the same is not always the case with a 4K projector. Another con can be the resolution itself. For example, although you can now get a 4K projector for as little as $1000, you can get a 4K TV for less than $500 and for even less during major sales events. While projector prices have dropped in recent times, they have for 4K TVs as well. When it comes to projectors, size matters, and that directly impacts many of the other benefits of the super-sized screen.Ĭost still remains the ultimate 4K projector drawback. If all things are equal, then a 4K projector has the display real estate to better show off the 4K resolution. Another knock-on effect of a larger screen is the resolution. In this sense, a projector is possibly the healthier option, providing you are a suitable distance away from the screen to begin with. Larger screens come with additional benefits including less strain on the eyes. Size and adaptability are not the only reasons to go large either. In contrast, 4K TVs always remain the size they are when you buy them. With a 4K projector, users can adjust the size to match the needs of the room and the occasion. What’s more, it is not just their size, but their adaptability. While 4K TVs tend to rise to around 85 inches, 4K projectors routinely go up to 300 inches. Both TVs and projectors can be purchased in varying sizes, but the difference is their limits. The biggest selling point with a 4K projector is the size.
